DAY 238: November 12, 2010; FRIDAY

249 (and then some)
Days of "Strawberry Jam" without "J"

Dear Jam,

Your first taste of "shakoy", there you are! It's that twisted fried dough, which can be bought at Php5, as opposed to the more expensive doughnuts of the same shape and size! So why did I let you have a go at it when we can afford the doughnut? Ah, because the best things in life are
cheaper than expected, if not free. And this delight, this sweet treat that becomes chewy in time exposed to air, has accompanied me in my best childhood memories. Imagine the joy, nay, the delectation in my expression when Mamilou arrives from work at the old Hometown, with a plastic bag full of these long, twisted treats! Pure heaven, I tell you! It's like me, taking home a box of Mister Donuts or Kirspy Kremes to you. Yes!

So this was for dessert at lunch when we supped on all things seafood! I brought fresh seashells, fresh white fish meat and fresh seaweed we call "guso". Now, this is saying something because I woke up early in the morning, with a tight pocket restricted to Php300. I had to haggle against the insistent vendors who wouldn't let me take one fourth of the kilo of every item. I understand that they need the money to profit the day's sale but they also have to understand that I am not feeding a battalion and that if I took home more than we can store, it's all going to end up in the doggy bowl. Besides, I was again, in a tight budget. Your Daddy has taught me how to discipline myself when it comes to the necessities. Thankfully and I hope he would be proud to hear that I only spent Php120! Yey! And that's for a delightful lunch already with a little more extra for the next couple of days.

I will share money matters with you when you grow up. Your Ninang Mayang told me that she once attended a seminar in Christian Parenting. One of the advise tells the parents to involve the children with expenditures, that parents should ask for their children's ideas when it comes to spending. In doing so, they raise financially conscientious children. This is one thing that Mamilou missed out, not to take it against her. But she was a single parent not only to me and your Ninang, she also had to supervise your Uncles Raf and Neil, while they were still here in the Philippines. She had a lot of things going on in her mind and perhaps, she didn't have the time to mind the finer details. But that's okay, she did a great job as it is evident in Ninang and me.

Speech progress, taken note. Early before I left for the market, I asked you if you wanted to watch "Cubeez" to keep you company while I was away. Perfect how you pronounced it finally as "Kyoo-beez". Good job, Kitten! ;) Then when we passed by STARBUCKS, you said "Tal-buks". Cute! What is cuter was when we asked you again to pronounce it but insisted to say "Kapee". Smart how you can associate STARBUCKS to coffee! ;) Speaking of which, we were supposed to go there with Mamilou. She invited us to grab coffee and frapp, hoping that you could go with us. When she found out you were in Mamala's care in Carmen, Mamilou decided to postpone.

ACCORDING TO NINONG:
On your way to Carmen, you pointed all the Jollibee branches and named all of them "Jabee!" You were behaved, he said but you were just all so cute and noisy. You have to be behaved as there isn't anyone else with you in the front passenger's seat but Nohnong in the driver's. When you came back, you looked even fancier than behaved with the new set of shirt-pants from Mamala. Ah! My big girl looks so lovely! The colors bring out the fairness of your skin and the softness in your eyes.

A little shoutout to Tita Teeteen! It's her birthday today. So altogether now, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TITA TITEEN! May you stay blessed and kept safe!

JAMantic of the Day:
We continued with our HARRY POTTER Marathon! Coming home late from work, we all sat down for coffee and a pudding where you asked off Nahnang's warm milk, like two kitty cats you were, sharing one mug. So with Harry Potter, you heard Harry scream "HAGRID! HAGRID!" in The Chamber of Secrets, he was coming from the memory in Tom Riddle's Diary. After him you screamed, mimicking how he reached his hand out, "Daddy! Daddy!" Haha! Cute! Then when you saw an owl fly past the screen you lifted you hand and made fluttering actions saying "Fy!" - fly, that should be. At the sorting ceremony, you wanted all of us to clap with you as you saw the students and teachers in Hogwarts do so whenever a student was sorted to a house. You want to go to Hogwarts when you grow up? ;)

Your Mommy,
